Assume the compressor seal went and dumped the ac system. Fast forward to yesterday. Put it all back together with new oil and new seals after flushing the evaporator and lines that were reused. Pulled a vacuum for 60 minutes and then let it set under vacuum for 30 minutes. Gauges did not move, Yay leak free system.

Very simply, the AC has 2 circuits. Circuit #1 operates the AC relay. Circuit #2 operate the clutch. Circuit #1, place your finger on the relay as someone turn the AC button on and off. If you feel the relay operate that circuit is ok Circuit #2, the relay contacts close a circuit to the AC clutch coil.
