Ethel Estella Banta, daughter of Patrick and Anna McDermott Murphy, was born March 14, 1896, at Dunlap, Iowa. She moved with her parents to Anthon in 1900 and except for a brief period spent in Oklahoma, had been a lifelong resident of this community. She married Carl Umbach on January 30, 1918, in Oklahoma. Mr. Umbach died in 1924.Ethel Banta, a 89-year-old homeowner and mayor of Natchez, died in a fire that consumed much of historic Hope Farm, a house built in the late 1700s. The cause of the fire is unknown, but the state fire marshal will be out to help determine it.
